[Throwback] When Calgary Walker Visited Chinook Kendo Dojo

We’re throwing it back to a special archive feature published in Japanese local newspaper _Calgary Walker (Issue 191)!

In this issue's fitness column, a local writer visited Chinook Kendo Dojo to experience Japanese Kendo firsthand after admiring the art since her school days.

🥋 Memorable Highlights from the Feature:

  • Traditional Dojo Etiquette:

The writer was deeply impressed by the dojo culture—shoes neatly lined up at the entrance and members lining up together for traditional pre-practice floor cleaning (Zokin-gake).

  • The Ultimate Core & Leg Workout:

Holding the proper basic stance (Kamae) and practicing footwork with heels slightly raised worked the calves and core so intensely she described her legs "shaking like a baby goat!"

  • Mind-Body Control:

Striking with the shinai (Men and Kote) engaged the entire upper body, shoulders, and core, teaching balance and precision rather than just arm strength.

It’s great to look back and remember that everyone starts somewhere! Kendo remains a fantastic way to build physical fitness, mental focus, and lifelong friendships.
